Netflix API

Electronista just posted an article talking about Netflix releasing a developer API.  Definitely sounds cool.  I'm envisioning plugins to sites like IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes and maybe even a FireFox plug-in (a la Ubiquity) that will enque/deque movies.

According to Electronista the API should be out tomorrow and will be free.

Standing in the shadow of giants

...and I am not afraid.

After a delightfully long flight from Minneapolis to LA, I'm here!  The area I'm in is surrounded by huge names in business.  My hotel is right across from Mattel, there's AIG across the street, Oracle's building looms and there are deafening whispers of Raytheon, Haliburton and several others.  It's really quite impressive.  I was a little intimidated at first by the area.  I just wasn't sure what to expect.  I'm really quite impressed more than anything now though.  I just had to take the big step to get out of my hotel room.

Class is supposed to start here in a few minutes, so I'd probably best be moving on.  I'll write about my flight sometime later.

Busy as a 9 month old can be!

I’m writing this at the end of what I’m told is Arden’s busiest day so far. From what I saw of him (and the tornado-ravaged house) I’m inclined to agree. Mom said he delighted in pulling absolutely everything off any shelf he could find, and by the time she could pick up the first few pieces, the next shelf was well on its way to total annihilation. Needless to say I came home to one pooped Mommy and one happy little guy. Ever since I got home and woke him up from his nap he was go-go-go. We had a great time checking on the garden, pointing at each and every bird for 100 miles and getting caught up on his day.

We’ve been trying to incorporate some sign language into our daily lives, since it seems babies have the capacity to understand communication, but not the adroit control over vocal cords necessary to speak. Arden has really been taking to these quite well. We’re getting very clear signs for “milk”, “eat” and, believe it or not, “airplane”. (He gets so excited when he hears one coming close) Signs for “more” and “drink” are coming along pretty well, the former becoming much more distinguishable every day from his new favorite trick, clapping. For the uninitiated, the sign for “more” is to tap both hands together, at the fingertips with a pinched hand (photo from http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/m/more.htm). The addition of signs to our daily lives has been a godsend to both Arden and his mother and me. It’s great being able to eliminate some guesswork.

Late last week we took Arden to the local park and gave him a little bit to ride in the swing. He really seemed to enjoy it quite a bit, but was also moderately distractible. Especially when the local puppies came to visit.

Yes, we still exist!

It’s been practically forever since I’ve last updated this. I feel pretty pitiful for that. At least there’s a lot of news to report! So last time I wrote anything our little duder was 10-ish pounds. He’s now closer to 30! Teeth weren’t even a twinkle in his eye back in February, but now he’s got 3 and almost his 4th! Okay, slow down there.

The major thing keeping you all from your Arden-crack was our move. It was just a shake-up and .........is a convenient excuse. I got a job in Brookings at Daktronics, which necessitated a move out of Vermillion. Arden has been handling everything like a champ. It’s been a blast seeing him blossom in our new home. We’ve got a nice big yard and he absolutely loves being outside.
